Incorporating these three easy knee-strengthening exercises into your workout routine can help. Seated Knee Extensions This exercise will help strengthen the muscles that extend (or straighten) your knee. Sit in a chair with one leg stretched out and resting on another chair at the heel. Using only your leg muscles, focus on pushing your knee down towards the floor. Your leg will stay straight, but you should feel the tug in your muscles as you contract them to concentrate on pushing your knee towards the floor. Hold this position for 10 seconds, and then take a 10 second rest. Do a total of 10 repetitions, and then switch to the other leg. Standing Curl Flexions This exercise works the flexors, or the muscles that bend your knee. Start by standing with your back against a wall. Your upper legs and back should be flat against the wall. Lift one leg off the floor, and bend at the knee so that it makes a 90-degree angle. Hold this bent position for 10 seconds, and then lower the foot back to the ground. If you do not feel a burn in your knee area, hold the pose for longer. Aim for a total of 10 repetitions with each leg. As your legs get stronger, build up to holding each flexion for 20 seconds rather than 10 seconds. Unweighted Squats This exercise will work the knee flexors as well as the extensors. Stand with your toes facing forward and your feet shoulder width apart. Then, squat down until your knees make a 90-degree angle. Then, slowly stand back up. Aim for 20 squats per day at first.
